I decided to do some research on why guys my age, older and younger, like this show. I couldn’t just read articles, I had to watch the show as I’ve been told by so many bronies who would eventually ask me to do an infamous MLP rap. I’ve been linked so many freaking times to MLP hip-hop, dubstep, eurobeat remixes, etc. I couldn’t help but wonder, what’s the big deal? How is this show any different from others?

I watched the first two episodes. The show reminded me of Spongebob and The Powerpuff Girls (not surprising since Lauren Faust, the creator, worked on the Powerpuff Girls) and no one ever said it was girly to watch those shows. Except for the conservatives who were saying Spongebob was gay, but no one really cared (except my Christian aunt and uncle who wouldn’t let my little cousin watch it, so I hope he turns out to be gay just to make them mad) but anyway…

In the Powerpuff heyday, I enjoyed the show. Three little girls kicking ass with rainbows and butterflies? Eh, why not? It’s pretty much the same thing as MLP but with horses and animals instead of Satan and Latino guys with gangrene. On top of that, one of them was a tomboy and Bubbles was the only one who was really “girly” so it really wasn’t THAT much of gender-based show. I watched Kim Possible. Hell, I watched Sailor Moon just to wait for DBZ to come on at 5:30, but I wasn’t IN to Sailor Moon. I just didn’t hate it.

As for the relation of Spongebob, there is definitely adult and child humor in MLP. C’mon, the dragon was clearly gay or extremely metrosexual. I was amused. I love Spongebob and still do. It’s one of my favorite shows, but I don’t see grown men dressing up as the characters from Spongebob and spamming my inbox about doing a Spongebob rap so there must be some kind of difference.

Let’s look at one of the main characters, Twilight Sparkle. She’s a bit of an antisocial nerd…sound familiar? That pretty much sums up the majority of my audience so I’m not surprised. Maybe these guys connect with her more than most cartoon characters who are usually charismatic, courageous, even social. On top of that, there IS some action in the show and not just lame songs and friendship morals. Also, one of the actors from Star Trek is a voice actor in the show. Maybe there’s some kind of subconscious liking to the show because the voice is…somehow familiar to the older guys who watched Star Trek. I’m totally making that up, but it would be a cool possibility.

Anyway, the Brony community is huge, which means it doesn’t matter if more guys like the show. There isn’t a group of people going around persecuting men who like MLP, so there’s no reason to really feel weird about liking MLP as a 30-year-old dude.

Of course, this brings me to my conclusion as to why I won’t do an MLP rap.

I’m not really into it. I watched the first episodes. It was all right. I don’t really feel like I NEED to watch more. I rap about what interests me. MLP – dun – does not – dun dun – interest me. DUN. DUN. DUUUUUUUUUN. I don’t mind having some fans as bronies, but hopefully future bronies will see this or talk amongst their brony friends about whether I would do an MLP rap and they will say… “Nay.” Pun intended.

I was going to put all of this in a facebook post, but it needed more than just a “no,” so I thought I’d give my fair share on the matter. I wondered. Now I wonder no more and now bronies will wonder no more as to whether or not I would do an MLP rap. Even after posting this, I know I’ll get, “Aww but dude, you should totally do an MLP RAAAPPP!! DO AN MLP RAAPP!! JUST DDOOO IITTT!! AAAHHHHHHHHHH!!! IT’S SOOOOO POOOPPULLAARRR!!!”

No thanks. There are definitely cartoons and shows I do like and will rap about, but this isn’t one of them. Thanks for listening, and I’ll see you tomorrow night for the live chat at 8 PM EST/GMT-5.

Also I’m doing custom songs for the holidays at nonelikejoshua.com//store and there’s shirts, iphone covers, awesome freaking hoodies, wristbands, posters, and stickers, so save that Kwanukkahmasadan money. Good night!
